Communication channels have frequency-dependent characteristics, hence it is useful to appropriately shape the frequency-domain characteristics of the signals sent over them. Furthermore, for wireless communication systems, frequency spectrum is a particularly precious commodity, since wireless is a broadcast medium to be shared by multiple signals. It is therefore important to quantify the frequency occupancy of communication signals.
